About Me
Sharonjit bhangu
- I have extensive experience in Child Protection work, as well as experience in specific work with unaccompanied minors. I have initiated Child Protection procedures, Care Proceedings and have a wealth of experience in the children and families arena. I have worked as a Locum Senior Practitioner and have the ability to manage complex case loads. Currently, I am a Service Manager in the Unaccompanied Asylum Seeking Children's Services, working for Kent County Council.
- I have undertaken specialist research into child protection issues within minority ethnic groups in Scotland and worked as an Independent Trainer on social issues where I have developed and delivered my own awareness raising programmes. My experience ranges from statutory to charity work and incorporates work with children and families and a variety of ethnicities, cultures and age groups. My Masters dissertation was entitled, “Honour killings – where is the honour? A cross cultural comparison of professional attitudes and perceptions and how these may affect intervention and prevention”. The research focused on the differences in attitudes and perceptions of honour killings and honour based violence in India and Pakistan compared to the UK, specifically Scotland, and how these differences may affect prevention and intervention.
- I was awarded the BME Young Female Person of the Year 2005 award, under the 'Youth Contribution to New Scotland' by Empower Scotland for research that I had done into the 'perceptions of child abuse within BME communities in Scotland', over 8 months where 140 respondents from different ethnic background were interviewed.
- I am experienced in giving evidence to the Court in complex cases within both public and private law proceedings. I strive to develop my knowledge and have a specialist interest in Honour Based Violence, Forced Marriage and Female Genital Mutilation.
